Responsible Manufacturing: what it really means to us

At Mosey Me, we’ve always believed that how something is made matters.

We make our collections in small runs with skilled makers and family-run businesses across Portugal, India and China. These are relationships we’ve built over time; not simply suppliers, but people we visit and work closely with.

For us, responsible manufacturing means knowing who makes our products, understanding the conditions they work in, and taking care with every part of the process.

We look beyond the finished product, considering working environments, social compliance, ethical trade and environmental and material sustainability when choosing who we work with. Where appropriate, we also look for recognised industry accreditations and standards. But we don’t believe a certificate alone can tell you everything you need to know about a factory or the people working there. That’s why being there matters to us.

Made by people, not just machines

One of the things we love about making in small quantities is that our products are genuinely made by people. A person cuts the fabric. A person sews it. A person finishes it, checks it and packs it. There’s a real skill and care in that process, but there’s also a certain human-ness to it.People can make beautiful things, but people can also make mistakes. A measurement can be marked incorrectly. A finishing detail can be missed. A product can make it through a check that it shouldn't have. That doesn't mean we accept poor quality. Quite the opposite.

It means we believe that when something does go wrong, our responsibility is to understand why it happened, address it with the people involved, and improve the process so it is less likely to happen again.

For us, responsible manufacturing isn't about pretending that human error doesn't exist. It's about putting the right systems and relationships in place to catch it, learn from it and continuously improve.

We also believe that quality is a shared responsibility. Our local partners and Buyer’s Agents work closely with our factories and carry out quality checks throughout production. We also review our processes whenever something goes wrong, working with our makers to understand what happened and what can be done differently next time.

Why we choose this way

There are more automated and more efficient ways to manufacture. Larger production runs, highly automated processes and more distant supplier relationships can create efficiencies. But that’s not the kind of business we want to build.

We’d rather make thoughtfully, in smaller quantities, with people we know and trust. We want to have genuine relationships with the people behind our products and to understand the hands and skills that go into making them. And we want to make thoughtful quantities of products rather than contributing to a cycle of overproduction.

It’s not always perfect. But it is personal, considered and something we care deeply about. Because to us, responsible manufacturing is ultimately about making things with care, and making sure that care extends beyond the finished product to the people who make it.
