behind the print

Behind the Print Clay

As usual our Clay print started by dreaming up moods. I really wanted to add a print into our tableware range that had warmth and richness, that could be the perfect backdrop for your winter soiree. Fancy enough for decorative champagne glasses, glitzy outfits and spilled wine yet fit the bill for a Sunday breakfast paired back with warm timbers and a cracking fire. Below is the original mood board I had created for the vibe I wanted this tablecloth to create and fit into - relaxed messy dinners with friends, floral centrepieces, cups of coffee, feminine shapes and the perfect backdrop for red wine. Red wine is my drink of choice over winter and I wanted that to be right at home with our Clay print.

Original mood board
From a colour perspective I was drawn to cherries, maroons, golds and coffee tones and initially started playing with the inclusion of green as well. That died out and I stuck with the warmer tones adding in a touch of peach to give some neutral space and very pale lilac.

Cut collage elements

I wanted the pattern itself to have a cut collage type of feel with lots of layers, something that felt busy yet wasn't too loud. As usual I love working in large scales - I made the repeat unit 92cm X 92cm. It gives the impact but you end up with large parts of colour so overall it doesn't feel as hectic as a small scale print.
