Summer Reading List with Tegan Brooke

Summer Reading List with Tegan Brooke
Summer has finally arrived, which means long, lazy days and holiday lie ins are just around the corner. It also means you finally have time to read a book or two. Stuck for what to read this summer? We've invited Tegan Brooke, also known as @theshelf_edit, to share her top 5 summer reads for this year. Read on to learn more about Tegan and what she's recommending.

How did “The Shelf Edit” come about?

I started The Shelf Edit in 2018 after having the idea to create a place for readers to find book recommendations. I didn't use the library at the time so knowing which books to spend money on was a constant struggle! I thought I was being super original so it was a huge and welcome surprise when I found a whole community of like-minded people. Needless to say I haven't been short of a good book rec since!

When/how did your love of reading start?

I've loved reading for as long as I can remember! I can't remember exactly when I started but I do know I was young as 5-6 and would beg my mum to take me to the shops or the library to pick out a new book.

What are your top five book recommendations that would suit most readers?

Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow - Gabrielle Zevin
The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
The Vanishing Half - Brit Bennett
The Great Believers - Rebecca Makkai
The Seven Husband's of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid

What stories inspire you the most?
I think every book I read inspires me, just the thought of the writer sitting to write, pouring their heart into the pages without knowing how it will be received is incredible. Authors sharing their memoirs are also special and such an honour to read, one in particular that stands out is Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner.

Other than reading, what are your self-care rituals or hobbies?

I have so many self care rituals and hobbies! I try to start every morning with a 5 minute EFT tap and journaling followed by the gym, atm I'm doing Whitney Simmons' Alive Strong 10 week program. I also have a small business making cute vinyl decals for glass cups and mugs along with other items (@shelfstudio_) which keeps me busy. I also try to unwind in the afternoons and on weekends by doing puzzles while watching Netflix.

What’s your go-to genre for a summer vacay?

I usually lean towards literary or contemporary fiction and love a bigger book over the holidays when I have more time!

What’s your fave piece from the Mosey Me summer collection?

I LOVE the Poppy quilt cover set - so good that it's double sided!! The Flowerbed towels are also such a vibe.

And finally, what are the 5 books you will be reading this summer?

 Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
You made a Fool of Death with your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet
The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding by Holly Ringland
